I believe that mystical consciousness is something available to all of us, though most remain unaware of it. This is too bad, because it can be a very beautiful thing, as though we were not looking at but into the heart of the world as it exists. Its essential features, it seems to me, are these: mystical consciousness brings its own guarantee of truth. Somehow we simply “know”–without analysis or conscious thought– that what we are experiencing is true, in the deepest sense of the word. As in a conversion experience, this higher conscious may be fleeting, but its consequences are permanent. Those who experience it are never the same again. It also seems to be very much the same for all peoples in all times, though we explain it in culturally determined ways. The experience comes first; the creed that we impose upon is secondary. Sometimes we make the creed so important that it obscures the experinece itself, substituting dogma for living truth.
